Frequently Asked Questions
- Is osteopathy covered by insurance plans? Most insurance have a portion allocated for osteopathy. If not, it is typically covered under the health spending account. Check your insurance policy for full details or contact for help.
- What kind of issues do you deal with?Osteopathy treats the body by working with the anatomy to affect the physiology. We see many physical ailments such as sore backs, sprained ankles, painful wrists, and stiff necks, but we also see a lot of patients improve with deeper issues such as chronic pain, breathing issues, digestive problems, jaw issues, pelvic issues, and more.
- Do I need a referral? No. Although, it is recommended to liaise with your medical doctor and your wider healthcare team to let them know you are receiving osteopathic treatment.
- How long of a treatment should I book for?Your initial treatment will be longer to give time to hear your story and assess your situation. Follow ups range from 25-55 minutes and depend on the complexity of your situation and your frequency of treatment.
- When should I book my follow up?Acute situations are typically treated every 3-6 days for the first 2 weeks or until it gets better. Chronic issues typically benefit from treatment every 2-4 weeks. General check ups are recommended every 4-6 weeks or as needed.
- Does it hurt?Although pain can be a good thing (it is your body’s indicator that something is wrong). Induced pain during treatment is typically bad. This is primarily because it causes your body to prioritize guarding itself and discourage healing. That is why we will never go beyond your comfort level during a treatment.
- What is the difference between osteopathy, chiropractic, and physiotherapy? These are all forms of physical or manual therapy. Many techniques are shared amongst them as there are only so many ways you can move and adjust someone’s body (stretching, manipulation, articulation, etc). The underlying difference is in their philosophy, thought process, and treatment styles.
- So what makes osteopathy different?Osteopathy takes into account the entire body to treat the cause and not just the symptoms. For example, when seeing a patient with knee pain, we don’t just treat the knee. Rather, we also check if there is any tension pulling on that knee from the hips or ankles. After treating those imbalances, We further assess to see if that knee problem had affected any areas above or below. Sometimes, knee issues lead to low back issues due to their connections via the hamstrings and pelvis. We use gentle manipulative techniques to create structural balance that leads to physiological homeostasis.
- What should I wear to my appointment?Comfortable clothes that allow you to move around. We don’t suggest thick jeans, trousers, or dresses.
- Do you treat pets?Animal osteopathy- coming soon!
- Do you treat children or infants?Yes! Please let us know in advance. Children and infants respond very well to treatment because 1. they are malleable and have not developed all the poor habits adults have, and 2. they have all recently gone through massive physical trauma (aka birth) and benefit greatly from osteopathy.
- Do I need to have an issue to be treated?Nope! Half of our patients have ongoing issues, but the other half get treatment for improved performance and as a preventative measure. In fact, we recommend our patients to come in for a few sessions even after they feel better. This is so we can really dig deep to uncover baseline issues your body puts up with everyday.
